Hi guys!
So, yh, I know what you all are thinking. ‘Where the hell have you been Jess?’ Pleaseeee don’t eat me up while I try to justify why I haven’t been consistent in blogging 😶. Well sadly I had to go back to school to write some exams (external exams tho) but I’m back-finally!!! And can I just say, it feels soooooooo good to be home. After about 4months of classes, homework, midterms, more homework and exams, I couldn’t just wait to get home and take a break. We’ll in this case a little more than a break – a whole 3 months! (don’t you just looove summer hols 😊😊). Dorm life is so stressful and I’m thankful I have some time away-even if it’s just for a few months. I’m so excited about this year’s summer because I have a lot of things planned. I finally have time to focus on blogging and other random stuff which I’d probably share with you guys soon in a blog post, so stay tuned (tuned? What’s the right word for staying tuned to a blog?) Okay, I can’t remember…… aaand there you have it, I’ve started rambling. Can we get back to today’s agenda? Thank you.

Today I’m going to tap into my zen-ish side (really doubt that’s a real word) and talk about one of the most common topics, Gratitude.

What is gratitude?
Simply put, gratitude is the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for something and to return kindness. It means being grateful, appreciative and thankful.

In today’s world, it’s difficult to be thankful. We complain about a lot of things, from how annoying our parents or siblings are, to how stressful school is, and even to the littlest things like how the WiFi isn’t connecting to our phones or how the traffic on the way home made us miss that epic movie or TV show, or how we’re having a bad hair day, or how we don’t have the perfect outfit for that party…….. The list is unending. But do we stop to realize that some people around the world don’t have half as much as we do and they are still happy? Or do we stop and think how life would be without these ‘annoying’ people in our lives? Without my brothers in my life, I probably wouldn’t be as playful and lively as I am. Without my parents, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today. Also, some people don’t have the privilege of WiFi. And when I say privilege, I mean it. Today, most people are focused on what they are unhappy about and fail to stop and count their blessings.

Late last year, I was sick. Like really sick. All I wanted was to get better. I didn’t want a new phone, or a new bag or any other stuff, I just wanted to get better and feel like myself again. Most of us take the life that we have for granted and focus on the little things. We focus on whether or not we’re going to get into that ivy league college, or whether or not we’re going to get perfect grades or achieve one thing or the other. We focus on the what ifs and complain about the things that didn’t work out. We need to realize that nothing on earth is our right. The fact that God has blessed you and given you sooooo many opportunities is not something you should take lightly. You should go on your knees every single day and thank Him for it because it is a gift and everything is not ‘normal’ . If you think breathing is normal, take a trip to the hospital and see the number of people on life support and oxygen masks. If you think walking is normal, ask those who don’t have legs. Even down to the littlest things, digestion – some people need machines to help them digest their food, something we take for granted. All we know is we eat the food and poop it out. Pooping is a miracle!

My mom has this friend who can’t do anything for himself. All he can do is blink. He can’t move, he can’t breathe, he can’t talk, he can’t do anything. He has nurses and machines to help him with everything – breathe, eat, wee, poo and even blow his nose! All his organs have failed except his eye balls. He can’t even scratch is eyes when they are ichy. Do you know how sad that is? He can only communicate through this software that allows him talk with his eyes. But even with that, this guy still occasionally writes articles on the newspaper. Long articles Oo. With his Eyes! I haven’t even written an article for the papers yet, and I have a full functioning body. He sends my mom mail once in a while and every time I read them, I almost cry. Even with everything he’s been through, he hasn’t given up. Some people would have committed suicide but he has admirable faith that God is going to heal him one day. And I believe that also. I believe that where there is life, there’s hope. So as long as you’re alive, God has a purpose for you. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t got everything you want yet, as far as you’re alive, it means that there is an opportunity to get them.

Life is a gift. A gift because we dont deserve it. We aren’t perfect people. We are sometimes selfish, conceited. We lie, we cheat we do some stupid stuff-sometimes. But God in his infinite mercy gave us this life. Life is priceless. There are so many billionaires that have died. These people would have paid any amount to get even a day more to live. But look at us today, alive and well, and we take it for granted. Gratitude is saying ‘okay, I might not be where I want to be right now, but thank you Lord for where I am today and all you have done to keep me alive’. It’s saying that ‘even though I have all these things in my life, I thank you Lord for taking control of it’.

Today, I want to urge us to take a minute of every day to say thank you to God. At least 5 minutes of every day. It might be the little things like thank you for my shoes, or bags, or thank you that I didn’t slip and hit my head on the bathroom tiles the other day. Anything at all. Let me tell you something. God hears! He really does, and He loves when we appreciate him. Even if you have some need or request, first thank God for what you have first before you ask for what you want. That’s why Thanksgiving comes before prayers.

And finally, I leave with this quote

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.”

John F. Kennedy

This generally means that it’s not enough to say thank you in prayers, we must express it in out lifestyle. Gratitude is an attitude. We shouldn’t go through life down trodden but we should have a joyful countenance and a pleasant expectation of good because we know God is in control. He’s driving our lives and no matter what comes our way, let’s choose to be thankful because He really does have a perfect plan for our lives and by his grace, we will accomplish all of it!  😊

For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the Lord , ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster to give you a future and a hope.
